Regenerative Injection Therapy also known as Prolotherapy is a recognized non-surgical ligament reconstruction procedure and utilized as a permanent treatment for chronic pain. The procedure stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to strengthen joints that have become weakened, stretched, torn, or fragmented by a trauma or arthritis. This instability allows joints to become hypermobile and painful..
How Does Prolotherapy Work?
Prolotherapy uses a sugar-based solution that is injected into the ligament or tendon where it attaches to the bone. This causes a localized inflammation in these weak areas, which then increases the blood supply and flow of nutrients. This stimulates the tissue to repair itself, strengthening and tightening the ligaments or structural “rubber bands” that hold our bones together to form joints. This intricate connection acts like shock absorbers for our body. Ligaments can become injured and will not tighten on their own to their original length once injured. This is largely because the blood supply to the ligaments is limited, and therefore healing is slow and not always complete. To further complicate this, ligaments also have many nerve endings and therefore the person will feel pain at the areas where the ligaments are damaged or loose.
Treatment for chronic pain resulting from injuries to the ligaments and tendons of the appendicular skeleton has been well recognized. However, soft-tissue injuries to the ligaments, tendons and fascia of the lower back have been largely ignored as a potential source of chronic back pain. Prolotherapy, is a collagen-strengthening injection technique that targets the soft tissues of the lower back.
Conditions That can be Treated Using Prolotherapy
This treatment is excellent for many different types of musculoskeletal pain, including:
- Arthritis

- Sciatica
- Neck Pain
- Sports injuries
- ACL Strain
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
- TMJ Pain
- Cartilage Injury
- Shoulder Pain

- Knee Injuries
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Tennis Elbow
Prolotherapy is an extremely safe procedure that has been practiced for over 50 years. The number of treatments required depends upon the severity of the condition, area treated, and a person’s ability to heal predetermined by other health factors.
